North Linn 80, Edgewood-Colesburg 34

DES MOINES – North Linn’s frenetic and efficient attack overwhelmed state tournament debutant Edgewood-Colesburg for the third time this season, this time in the opener of the 2018 IHSAA State Basketball Tournament. The Lynx, who placed third in 1A last year, jumped out to a 52-21 lead by halftime and would leave with their 11 th consecutive win by at least 40 points.

Ed-Co kept Monday morning’s matchup closer than their late January game against North Linn, but coach Justin Olind’s team committed 27 turnovers and were outscored 36-0 off takeaways. Ethan Streicher and Jacob Wessel led the Vikings (21-5) with nine and eight points each.

Top-seeded North Linn (27-0) was paced by its high-powered backcourt, getting 23 points from senior Ryan Miller and 20 points from junior Jake Hilmer. Both also had six rebounds and Hilmer added nine assists and eight steals. The Lynx used their full-court pressure to score 22 fast break points and they never trailed in the quarterfinal.

North Linn will make its third semifinal appearance on Wednesday at 2 p.m. It has never played in a championship game.
