Class 2A Quarterfinals

Cascade, Western Dubuque 60, Van Meter 47

DES MOINES – Efficient shooting and stifling zone defense have long been hallmarks of Cascade, Western Dubuque basketball, and Tuesday morning’s Class 2A quarterfinal against No. 3 seed Van Meter was a showcase for just that. The Cougars (24-1) jumped out to an early lead and held Van Meter to a season-low in scoring as coach Jacob Brindle’s squad claimed a 60-47 win at Wells Fargo Arena.

Cascade had four scorers in double figures – Haris Hoffman, Gannon O’Brien, Derek Koppes, and Johnny Supple – and made 11-of-21 shots from 3-point range in the thorough win. The Cougars only committed six turnovers in advancing to the semifinals for the fifth time in program history.

Van Meter (23-2) trailed 19-5 after the first quarter and rallied to get as close as two points at the end of the third quarter and early in the fourth on J.J. Durflinger shots. The senior guard led the Bulldogs with 15 points. The rest of his teammates combined to shoot just 11-of-30 from the field in the 32-minute contest, with 6-foot-9 posts Grant Johnson and Ryan Schmitt held to 12 points and 12 rebounds against the undersized Cougars. Cascade finished the game off with a 21-10 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Cascade will meet Sheldon in Wednesday night’s semifinals, scheduled for an 8:15 p.m. tipoff at Wells Fargo Arena.
