DES MOINES – Waverly-Shell Rock worked through a tough Mount Pleasant squad on Tuesday afternoon to reach its fifth semifinal round in the last eight years. The Go-Hawks (19-6) were down 23-20 after a physical first half, then shot 79 percent from the field and made 15 free throws in the final two quarters to win, 59-51.

Mount Pleasant was led by senior guard Brady Sartorius, who scored a game-high 25 points and sank three of the team’s six 3-point makes. Waverly-Shell Rock’s tight defense and deliberate offense took over late in the game and the Panthers (21-4) could only get as close as five points in the final moments.

Three Go-Hawks scored in double figures, led by Jack Seward’s 17. Luke Velky added 14, Braden Holmquist had 11 with four assists, and post Mosai Newsom finished with nine points and six rebounds.

Mount Pleasant was making is sixth tournament appearance in the last nine seasons, but it hasn’t won at Wells Fargo Arena since its 2012 title team. The Go-Hawks await the winner of Oskaloosa and Sergeant-Bluff Luton in Thursday’s semifinals.
