Class 1A Quarterfinals

St. Mary’s, Remsen 73, Lynnville-Sully 57

DES MOINES – St. Mary’s, Remsen feels ready for its semifinal rematch. There was no overlooking Monday afternoon’s Class 1A quarterfinal opponent though, and a deep-shooting Lynnville-Sully made the Hawks work hard for a 73-57 win at Wells Fargo Arena. St. Mary’s pulled away late and stayed undefeated to earn a semifinal against Grand View Christian for the second straight year.

The Hawks (26-0) used a balanced offense and tough interior defense to top Lynnville-Sully (22-4), which was making a repeat appearance in the quarterfinals. All five St. Mary’s starters scored at least nine points, and they were led by 20 from senior forward Derrick Schorg. The northwest Iowa squad outrebounded Lynnville-Sully, 41-33, and held the sixth-seeded Hawks to just 33 percent shooting on the afternoon.

Lynnville-Sully got as close as three points early in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 54-51 on a Tanner Foster 3-pointer. Then, St. Mary’s reeled off 12 straight points in less than three minutes to put the contest away. Lynnville-Sully was just 6-of-27 from 3-point range on the long Iowa Wolves court, and forced only six turnovers in the game.

St. Mary’s fell to Grand View Christian, 45-36, in the 2017 semifinals, which marked its first state tournament appearance. The Hawks went on to finish fourth, but haven’t lost since. They’ll meet the defending champion Thunder at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7.
