DES MOINES – Xavier, Cedar Rapids fell short of three-peat ambitions, but Friday was a successful finish of its four-year run. The top-seeded Saints (20-7) won a 60-50 contest against Waverly-Shell Rock to finish third in Class 3A, sandwiching two titles in 2016 and 2017 with consolation wins in 2015 and 2018.

The two squads met in early December with Xavier sprinting past the Go-Hawks (19-8) in a 54-27 win. Friday morning’s consolation at Wells Fargo Arena was far closer, with Xavier needing a big second quarter to pull away. Seniors Matthew Mims and Jackson Joens led the Saints with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Waverly-Shell Rock was making its second straight consolation game appearance and capped another successful postseason run with three scorers in double-digits – Luke Velky (13 points), Jacob Bahe (11), and Braden Holmquist (10). Coach Nate Steege’s squad has advanced to the semifinals six times since 2007.
